Self Care and Finance

By Lin Nguyen

This year has been a massive upheaval for just about everyone, and social media is flooded with different ways to practice self-care to get ourselves through it all. We love a multistep skincare routine and a glass of wine just as much as the next person, but self-care is about more than just pampering ourselves.

True self-care helps us feel at peace with ourselves and our lives. It’s a way to take care of our mental health and overall well-being. But for many people, money is a source of stress. In fact, money is cited as the number one source of stress and anxiety among single people and couples. If you’ve ever worried about money, you know the impact it can have on your mindset, your physical health, and your sleep. Money, and the lack of tools for talking about it, commonly creates problems between partners as well.

Because of this, self-care shouldn’t stop with the bubble baths and vanilla scented candles. Keep going. What can you do to help yourself relax and rid yourself of your financial fears?

One way to start is by putting away money in an emergency savings fund. An emergency fund can help you create a buffer between yourself and the stress that comes with “what if” scenarios. It allows you to relax knowing you’re prepared for anything that may come your way.

On top of that, developing a value-based budget can help you to understand where your money is going, and ensure that you’re spending it in a way that’s in line with your goals and priorities. The goal is to get the maximum amount of joy and security from your money.

The goal is to get the maximum amount of joy and security from your money.

There are so many ways to elevate your financial situation: having multiple streams of income by working on fun side hustles, growing your wealth through passive investments, and planning your finances so you can take that vacation you’ve been dreaming about. Your goals can be achieved by putting in the time and making a plan to reach them. You can bring your dreams to reality. Moreover, it’ll bring you confidence -- confidence that you’re capable, secure, and prepared for anything.

It doesn’t have to be an overwhelming process, and you shouldn’t expect it to happen overnight. You can take it step by step, and you can pair the time spent getting your money together with doing a face-mask to make it more enjoyable. Bottom line, taking care of yourself means taking care of business, and that means practicing financial self-care.

As Stephanie says, “Don’t get me wrong, I’m a new woman after a bath or sauna. But nothing can replace knowing you’re safe, knowing that you have options, and knowing you’ve got a backup if life throws you a curveball.”
